THE ART OF BEING YOUNG AND HAPPY Winnie Awuor Mar 1

How many times have I thought that my life would be complete if I acquire something or change a certain aspect of my life or body? I frequently had such thoughts as I was growing up. It is time I realize that unless I am able to make myself happy, no one else can do it for me. I don’t find happiness, I make happiness. The question is “How?” Start by doing what I enjoy, it may be swimming, hiking, jogging, dancing, singing, reading or simply basking in the sun. A happy person is also not controlled by a circumstance, but rather, by attitude. I may be one who keeps getting sent away from school due to lack of school fee, books or uniform and though this may be enough to demoralize and embarrass me, I still choose to see as what it is – a passing phase. I will not remain in school forever. The fact is that I am luckier than any other children of my age who for whatever reason are denied an opportunity to go to school. As a young person, I make the mistake of focusing on what is wrong with my life and barely notice all is right. I weep about my parents not having enough money to buy what I want. Why not appreciate the fact that they are unable to buy me outfits but they always ensure that I don’t go hungry. Happiness comes from appreciating tough times because they make me resilient and wiser. Only  I am in charge of my own happiness.
