A journey to Kisumu the second City of Kenya. Winnie Awuor Nov 16
I remember vividly that fateful day. It was August 28th , 2008 on a Wednesday morning, the day for my departure to Kisumu. The day was just like other days, I planned up my departure sleeves which was bound to work to my advantage.
It was a French drench morning like dew in the grass when I woke up, I found our compound unusually quiet. I took a shower then put on my new school uniform which made me look like an angel. I took my breakfast on the table with all my brothers and sisters. Trully speaking I was very happy as a king who sat on his throne enjoying the cold breeze from the sea. Surely a good day is seen on its morning, I was very shy in front of the crowd but my first day to go for a tour made me very excited .
Sincerely speaking when my departure started,it was very cold .When I was on the way going to the bus stop, birds known as early risers were busy sending their melodious songs to God. Cold wind from the sea made peace to sway this way and that way like soldiers saluting to their king. The sky was somehow cloudy with drizzles at a time. By the time I reached the bus stopI found everybody was seated. The day was colourful and successful. Within a two shakes of a duck's tail the bus which was to take us for a tour arrived, immediately we got into the bus and it took off without wasting time.
The big day had finally reached and actually things had been very okay but the moment of my depurture from my family members was not very easy. The worst part of it was when it ressurected the melancholic memory of the death of my beloved mother. This kept back tears of anguish that were already rolling down my cheek. On the way people were singing happily, Eunice our teacher leading us in some songs. When we reached Kisumu it was 12.00 noon actually things were very okay. The day I waited for in my life had finally come. This takes long in my mind when am still recalling. Our teachers Eunice and Becky took us for a tour to see many things which included among others the National Museum of Kisumu, a python, a tortoise as old as 300 years, we also saw rocks and other interesting things as compared to our small Ndhiwa town. The day was very nice although Kisumu is different compared to Ndhiwa. In Kisumu people dress smartly and work in offices.
When we came back it was around 10.00 pm. We found everybody asleep and we could not see any rays of light passing through the houses. Surely that day will remain in the most conscious part of my brain and I will live to remember that opportunity knocks once at every persons door.
