Protecting Girls in Lockdown
One of the main global responses to COVID-19 has been to close schools, and Ndhiwa has been no exception. When schools are closed, our girls are at home. Home is not always a safe space as there is an increased likelihood of child abuse and neglect. Girls are likely to be exposed to violence, and left without access to food. There have been increasing incidences of child labour, sexual violence, physical assault, neglect, and malnutrition. Georgina Gor Awino is 19 years old and has recently started studying Education with Science at Moi University in Eldoret. Georgina hopes that studying her diploma will help her to become a biology and chemistry teacher in the future. Georgina was born in Yiembe village and is the second last born of six children in her family. Georgina attended Koduogo Primary School, which is one of Team Kenya’s partner schools in Ndhiwa. Erick Otieno been appointed as the new Agribusiness Manager at Karibuni Eco-Cottages. Erick has been a dedicated volunteer for Team Kenya’s implementation partners, Ndhiwa Community Empowerment and Development Project (NCEDP) for many years. Erick was supported with contributions towards his studies through school and college and is now determined to use the knowledge and skills he has acquired to contribute towards the development of his community. Here in the North East, we are lucky enough to have some of the UK’s most stunning landmarks right on our doorstep. Rich in Roman History, World Heritage site Hadrian’s Wall attracts visitors far and wide with its breath-taking views of Craig Lough, Housesteads Roman Fort and the famous Sycamore Gap. On the 11th May 2019, eleven volunteers from Team Kenya conquered the 17.5 mile walk in order to raise money for our programmes in Ndhiwa.
